Listen to a song from the great Gaelic singer Christine Primrose June 03 2016

One of the great Gaelic singers, Christine Primrose is a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic, and has been singing traditional Gaelic song all her life. Originally from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, she has travelled the world singing and teaching, blazing a path that many other Gaelic singers have followed.

This song is well known as a 'waulking' song, sung to accompany the fulling of cloth by a group of women, but has also been described by older generations of sailors as a man's drinking song. The 'black haired girl' of the title is  actually a sailing ship, and the song celebrates the virtues of the ship itself.

Christine has recorded several albums for Temple Records and guested on many more; you can find them all here.
